A guide for families
Is a direct cremation less respectful than a funeral?
Cairns and Far North Queensland families ask whether choosing a direct cremation means caring less. What the care involves, what is left out on purpose, seeing your loved one first, and how the goodbye still happens.
No. Your loved one is cared for with exactly the same dignity they would be given before any funeral. A direct cremation happens without a service attached to it, and the goodbye is held when and where your family chooses.
It is one of the questions Cairns families put to Shane, and it is a fair one to ask. Maybe your mum said she wanted no fuss. Maybe your dad could not stand funerals. Maybe the money for a chapel, a procession and a wake just is not there right now. Then somebody in the family asks out loud whether choosing the simple option means you cared less. This guide answers that straight: exactly what happens to your loved one, what is left out and why, and how the goodbye still happens.
What happens to your loved one
Respect shows in the care, so here is the care, in full. We bring your loved one into our care at any hour, seven days a week, from a home, a hospital, a hospice or an aged care facility anywhere in the region. If they are in a facility, we speak to the staff directly and arrange the transfer. From there, a direct cremation with us includes:
- mortuary care and preservation
- the doctor's cremation certificates and all the application and registration paperwork
- an environmentally friendly cardboard coffin
- private transport to the crematorium
- the cremation itself
- registration of the death and the official certificate
- delivery of the ashes to your family, or to a friend you nominate
None of that is trimmed because there is no service. Your loved one gets the same care either way. What changes is everything that would have happened around them for the people attending.
What is left out, and why
A direct cremation leaves out the funeral service, the chapel hire and the celebrant. It also leaves out death notices, flowers, catering and printed booklets, and anything beyond the standard coffin and the standard return of the ashes. If you want a premium coffin or a decorative urn, ask and Shane will quote it plainly.
Those things are for the people saying goodbye, and they matter. They just do not have to happen on the day of the cremation, at a venue, on a schedule set by someone else. Leaving them out keeps the cost down and hands the timing back to you. There is no chapel, no procession and no cost for things you did not ask for. You can see exactly what the price covers on our pricing page, and our guide to what is included in a direct cremation goes through it line by line.
If you want to see your loved one first
A direct cremation does not include a formal viewing. For some families that is the part that gives them pause, and it is worth saying out loud on the first call. If seeing your loved one matters to your family, tell Shane. He will tell you honestly what is and is not possible in your situation, rather than promising something that cannot be arranged.
The goodbye still happens
Plenty of families choose a direct cremation and then hold a gathering that feels far more personal than a formal funeral would have. Once the ashes are back with you, the memorial can be whenever and wherever suits: the backyard, a favourite beach, a family lunch months later when everyone can finally get to Cairns.
A death notice in the local paper is arranged separately and is not part of the direct cremation price. You are free to place one yourself, and Shane can point you in the right direction if you have not done it before. Our guides to holding a memorial after a direct cremation, telling people when there is no funeral and keeping or scattering ashes in Queensland cover the rest.
When the family does not agree
Sometimes one person wants a full funeral and everyone else wants it kept simple. Hear them out. A traditional funeral is the right choice for some families, and our comparison of direct cremation and a traditional funeral sets out when. What we would push back on is the idea that the simple option is the disrespectful one. The care is the same. The difference is who sets the schedule for the goodbye.
If you are still weighing it up, ring Shane. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across Cairns, Port Douglas, the Atherton Tablelands, Mareeba, Innisfail, Mossman and the surrounding region. Everything is put in writing before anything proceeds, the price is the price, and you will never be asked to commit before you have seen the cost in full.
Common questions
Is a direct cremation less respectful than a funeral?
No. Your loved one is cared for with exactly the same dignity. The only difference is that the cremation happens without a service attached to it. Plenty of families choose this and then hold a gathering in their own time that feels far more personal than a formal funeral would have.
Is our loved one treated any differently without a service?
No. We bring them into our care at any hour, provide mortuary care and preservation, prepare and lodge every certificate and form, and take them by private transport to the crematorium. The ashes are then delivered to your family or a friend you nominate. None of that changes because there is no service.
Can we see our loved one before a direct cremation?
A direct cremation does not include a formal viewing. If seeing your loved one matters to your family, say so when you call. Shane will tell you honestly what is and is not possible in your situation rather than promising something that cannot be arranged.
Can we still have a memorial and a death notice?
Yes. Once the ashes are back with you, you can hold a memorial whenever and wherever suits your family. A death notice in the local paper is arranged separately and is not part of the price. You can place one yourself, and Shane can point you in the right direction.
